The Federal Communications Commission has granted authority to Globalstar to operate their second generation satellites with the United States.
Representatives with Globalstar said the authorization from the FCC will be effective when it completes registration of the constellation with France.
Globalstar recently launched six satellites in October of 2010. Four of these six are already operational and are generating revenue. Globalstar said the two other satellites will be operational soon.
As soon as the registration goes through, Globalstar will activate ground and mobile stations in North America. This will improve coverage for all Globalstar’s voice and data customers in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Northern Mexico and the Caribbean.
Globalstar has recently taken delivery of six new second generation satellites. They expect to launch these next six in May.
Moving forward Globalstar plans to conduct two more launches with six satellites in each launch vehicle. These are planned to launch over the next three months.
All launches will take place in Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
Customers benefit using the Globalstar service when traveling outside of landline and cellular service areas.
