Iridium and GEOS Partner Offering Emergency Response Service

Posted: December 20, 2011

Iridium satellite communications partners with GEOS emergency response service and offering this service to Iridium Extreme satellite phone customers.  This will be at no cost to Iridium customers.  Iridium has integrated the GEOS service into the SOS button on the Iridium Extreme satellite phone.  The Iridium Extreme is the most rugged and advanced satellite phone on the market.  It will be the first satellite phone to offer a SOS button.  The GEOS service is an enhancement to the satellite phone’s location awareness services.

All a customer needs to do in the case of an emergency is simply press the SOS button.  This will automatically dial the GEOS emergency response center providing a live support representative.  In the past the satellite emergency messaging devices only offered one way SOS. Now customers can maintain contact with the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC) during their emergency.  GEOS is adding an extra layer of performance and safety to the dependable Iridium Extreme service.

When GEOS receives emergency alerts, they notify the Response Search and Rescue (SAR) authorities through a global 24/7/365 service IERCC facility in Texas.  They then coordinate a response to the emergency.  They have coordinated thousands of responses in over 100 countries since 2007.

Iridium Extreme customers must register at www.geosalliance.com/iridium to start this emergency response service.  Through the GEOS service customers tell the detail of their emergency to SAR professionals and they can send location data to the local public authorities.

The SOS button on the Iridium Extreme phone can be programmed to call someone else instead of the GEOS service.  The customer may choose to have emergency calls routed to another SAR provider.

There are no charges to access the basic GEOS service for Iridium customers that purchase the Iridium Extreme phone with active service.
